re: http://community.elgg.org/pg/plugins/bman/read/499244/omni_inviter-for-171-10b4 "...There needs to be a GPL version of a inviter badly,..." BMan -- some interesting thoughts coming thru..;-)
I thought I'd start this separate topic where we can discuss the yet-to-be-coded GPL'ed ElggViter. The pros of such contact inviters might out-weigh the cons. Even though I have personally had quite the need for such an "Inviter" (Our FlagShip Elgg-based site went from 1 to 100,000 registered within 18 months with no "inviters" except the built-in Elgg "Invite Friends;-)
So... whence my interest ? I just enjoy writing code ;-) and maye I can help out some of my elgg-friends who believe they need such a utility.
Anyone who's seriously interested in "ElggViter", please feel welcome to come your thoughts post here.

You must log in to post replies.@ Big D : you forgot about the Contacts importer plugin from webgalli @ http://community.elgg.org/pg/plugins/webgalli/read/384461/contacts-importer-pluggin ?
@WG
be not supercillous ;-) big "D" does not forget nuffink..
FIRST.. read BMan's comments here -->
http://community.elgg.org/pg/plugins/bman/read/499244/omni_inviter-for-171-10b4%C2%A0
The issue *is Openinviter.com's policies - which is what you're also using. The day Openinviter walks the road-well-taken by Octazon... everyone using OpenInvter will be dead ;-( So... until then - do your research, be seriously interested in some new-fangled ElggViter. And so - how about some srious and constructive commenting on the subject ?
Sure D, Count me in for the research on this in your labs!
Oki ;-)
I'm counting on you to come back and post something from your own research back here ;-)
I am currently looking thru the API code requirements for -->
I need some serious technical help to cover more vendors.. anyone else available..?
There is a growing market in China look at some of their sites as well such as:
renren (www.renrenwang.com)
douban (www.douban.com)
If you can't understand Chinese, view in google chrome and translate it. :)
"Elggviter" needs some serious input from serious developers. Despite my being somewhat commercially oriented (bills to pay, etc.. you know how life goes..) This PlugIn is one which I *will code for public release. My Fave Luv = Elgg needs this oomph to take on the likes of the other Soc`Nets. So c`mon guys -- let's make this a reality.
I ain't giving up on this ElggViter idea ;-) Got some research done thanks to some people's input(s). It seems there is no real necessity to get involved with APIs etc for other web-sites - I've figured out a means to "scrape" content from an external web-site and filter the fetched text. This was acciddently discovered while I was trying to find a way to automatically login an Elgg site (or any other site for that matter). Once I had succeeded with aut-login into the Elgg community itself, the lights pooped open ;-O This method could be used to login into e.g. MySpace, fetch my friends' emails/ contacts and send them invites to come and join my Elgg based better-than-ning social-site.
well... the webgalli never worked out for me... well it did, but not for hotmail/msn which is highly use in south america, more than facebook...
It has been quite some time since this "ElggViter" thingymejig got any comments. Since my first posts here -- I have come across newer technology that obviates the need for ElggViter to rely on pre-existing open-source "inviter" tools - I plan to literally "roll my own" and "reinvent the wheel" ;-) because this ElggViter wheel does not exist yet. To make "ElggViter" a reality -- I would like to see several volunteers come forward who can provide their time, their friendster, myspace, hi5, facebook, orkut, xing, etc credentials for testing . And so.. up to you guys - do you want this or not ? My time for this will be free as will be yours ;)
