Is there any way to make the url to a users profile shorter, maybe groups also?

Woody I thot u tried the custom groups htaccess..

I do believe it is *my coding... i posted it first @ google elgg group.
http://groups.google.com/group/elgg-users/tree/browse_frm/month/2009-03/cf6e5dd1da34e6b3?rnum=181&_done=%2Fgroup%2Felgg-users%2Fbrowse_frm%2Fmonth%2F2009-03%3F
be nice sometimes to be ACK'ed ! b./c he later had a "problem"..
couldna fix n i didna help nomore'
it does piss me off when people post code I posted earlier (there's proof @ google groups..) and forget to pay due respect...
Didn't know, thanks to you (yet again) Dhrup.
As for the shortening of the Group coding.... I wouldn't even know where to begin with php (you know I wing it as it is)
Goofers: At the beginning I didn't think that it had worked either. The long links still appear on all of the pages. It's just when you type in the direct link that it directs you there... e.g. put the code and type in goofbucket.com/goofbucket or some other member.
n/p woody ;-) just clearing misunderstandings...-)
re: wot u want w/ groups.. if not too many grps (like wallace duz;)
(i repeat code..)
e.g.
RewriteRule ^Elggalaxy$ /elggalaxy pg/groups/52477/hackers-elggalaxy/
and so on... try it on yr site ;) it will work..
you can manually look up your few "special" groups ;-)
( read thru carefully...,

( I ain't giving out my funky code from my other commercial SAAS lolz;-)
It will take some smart-like php code to do this effect within the context of elgg
too many variables involved .... blv me.. b/c i done lotsa thinking abt this (group) aspect
my mickey mouse 1-liner has to be the last line in .htaccess
;-)

Aha
FInally found this
Jeroen Dalsem: RewriteRule ^([A-Za-z0-9\_\-]+)$ http://%{HTTP_HOST}/pg/profile/$1 [R] is better (supports numbers in username)
Posted to the wire 30 days ago via site.
Jeroen's code is improvement on the rewrite rule.. Thanks Jeroen ;-)
How about the issue with losing the search when code added to htaccess? Has anyone investigated further into this?
fixed already.
