Problem installing elgg 1.7

Hi
I tried to install elgg on my webserver.
After entering database-stuff i was directed to the settings-page and filled out this form. When i click on "save" i got a 404 Page not found error.
Hope anyone can help

Information like that will help to zoom in onto the possible causes quicker ;- )
You may need to modify the rewrite path in .htaccess if you run on a sub domain or sub directory.
Please ensure that you have the necessary permissions for your engine directory and an htaccess file is created.

Hi there
I created a new subdomain elgg.idotter.ch and installed it in the directory /elgg/ because /data/ mustn't be located in installation path.
now, after installing everything seems to work despite css. If i deactivate simple cache the layout will be shown ...

how can i install elgg in root directory when /data/ mustn't be in installation path?
can you help me?

if css still not work -
root folder for elgg install ? --> data dir *outside that level..
plesk ? is not trivial.. study this -->

@Dhruva didn't work :(
I have a directory besides httpdocs called private where my host said i should place /data/ but this didn't work yet :-(
@cash didn't find my problem there ...

Oh sorry, thought this was the answer to my other question with css or data/ issue ...
