With some code tweaking.. can be done ;-)

Why do you want a button linking to a widget? If it is not part of a form you want to submit, you can easily make a hypertext link look like a (formatted) button. And most buttons in ELGG don't look like the standard Windows or Mac Buttons, do they?

I already did do some preliminary coding to see how this might work..

There's some "code wrapping: that has to be done for the widget's basic code so that it can be called a a direct link as if it were an actual properly "wrapped" Elgg page... but it can be made to work..

Tho I also still wonder why you need it to be trigerred thisaway ?
