  • I will actually be quite interested in knowing if they are bots as well. I had the first iteration of my elgg site spammed by this sort of messages to the point that I had to delete it and start again. It will be good to know if there is a prevention method for this as captcha does not seem to work.

  • You could experiment with the flexreg plugin, which is part of the form suite of plugins.

It allows for moderated registration. You could add a series of registration questions to your form and reject anyone who does not give appropriate answers.

  • I got the same message yesterday. I reported it to see if the site owners will do anything to stop this kind of stuff.

  • While I was testing the new captcha I examined the logs and found that for this site all of the spam that shows up now is manually submitted.  This latest bout of spam from Christin had to have been a bot to send the messages because so many were sent in such a short time.  I over-hastily deleted the user, so can't compare the logs to see if the sign up process was manual or automated.

As for trying to stop spammers, yes we are trying different approaches but there is very little if anything we can do to get around human spammers.
