Can you check that you don't have the Walled Garden plugin enabled?  Each profile field has its own access level, so if your users are selecting a restrictive access, the information won't show up.  You can set the site-wide default access level in the Site Administration, but users can still override it.

This all sounds a little strange.

Profile pages are always public in Elgg. The only way to close that off is with a custom plugin.

Do you mean that you can't see certain information on the profile pages if you are logged out?

If i logged out and move the mouse over a profile picture or autor name, i can see the right link to the user profile at the statusbar. And if i click it, the system brings me direct to the frontpage.
So the link is right but something blocks me to open any profiles.

Now i deactivated some plugins - but nothing changed :o(
