Repositories, Updates, etc.

I was thinking that it would be a good idea to impliment an admin feature that would make updating Elgg, or installing elements something like Ubuntu's "Add/Remove programs" feature ... or, much the same as the file repositories. What do you think ?

I think it would be a great idea, being able to update the Elgg core right from the admin panel. The software could periodically check for updates, and install them if necessarry, if the admin chooses to do so.

This would be a great addition to an upcoming version of Elgg.

  • I like this idea a lot, but it sounds complicated.  I'm not sure it fits into the next release.

  • There was some discussion about this on the Google Group, but Evan is right--This isn't something for 1.8.  That said, 1.8 will include some important additions to the manifest.xml files in plugins that will make a repository possible later on.

  • @js

what you describe is a wordpress like feature, it can remotely find/install/update/uninstall plugins and update core. updates can be triggered automatically with the usage of cron jobs, or manually.

I agree with the others, we need more standardization before entering into something like this.
