Problem with IE 8

I am really bummed out. Had my system all set to start adding users and found we had a problem with IE. User can register, get validation email and click on the email link to go to page but when they try to login nothing happens. There is no message and no login. It looks as though the page has reloaded and no login occurs.  I disabled all the plugins to see where the problem started but can't find it. Now with almost no functionality (because of disabled plugins) still no login. Everything works perfectly in Firefox and Chrome but most of my audience has a computer they can barely use with all default factory settings, meaning they almost all use IE. I thought this might be a known glitch so I'm asking about it before giving up.  I thought at first it was just a problem with the cache or having forgotten to log out but it happens even when I try it on a new computer. Thanks for any help.

  • I had a similar problem reported on trac on login not working on IE8 but since no one else had experienced it, it was closed.  Anyway, everyone's been busy with 1.7 testing.  I think the behavior for me was with the 64 bit version of Windows 7 and I believe with one of the versions (64bit version or 32bit version) of the browser but not both.

  • Here is the ticket if you would like to reopen it. The problem is that we've been unable to reproduce it.

    1. Is it site dependent? Maybe there is some plugin causing problems. Try disabling all plugins and see if it still happend.
    2. Is it browser dependent? Maybe there is some add-on that is causing the problem. I don't know.

If your site is publically available, I'd be interested in taking a look at it. If not, it would be great if you would turn on script notifications in IE and see what comes up. To do this, select Internet Options, then Advanced, and then under browsing, it is "Display a notification about every script error".

  • I'm not sure what you mean by site dependent or browser dependent. I did disable all the plugins but a couple and it didn't help. Then I emptied all data out of MySql and that didn't help either. I did a duplicate site on a different domain with the same plugins and it works fine. It's baffling. I don't know what kind of add-on you mean but I don't have any add-ons to IE.

It is publically available at feel free to play with it. You should be able to create an account and log in with Firefox or Chrome but not log in with IE. The working version is at  On this copy I uploaded a new copy and then added the plugins from the first site.

I turned on the script notifications but I didn't see any kind of notification when I tried to log in.

  • I can confirm this problem on Bunni's site.

I registered at the site and can login using Firefox (on both XP and Vista machines).

I can also login using IE7 under XP.

Login fails with IE8 under Vista. I'm just refreshed back to the front page with empty username and password fields.

  • I haven't had a chance to setup some VMs with IE to test this. I still plan to do this.

  • I tried and can confim as well, one thing I did notice was that when I switched on "compatability view" and tried to log in I got the missing tokens error.

  • Thanks for the update Cash. I was thinking of deleting and reinstalling everything from scratch cause IE works fine on my test site (which has a lot of plugins but not much real testing yet). I'll wait until you tell me the problem or that you're done trying to find it. As for what chambo said, It's too geeky for me. I don't know what compatability view is or what missing token errors are.  I do appreciate that you're all trying to help and I love the spirit of open source software. I wish I knew enough to contribute.

  • I loaded up a VM with Windows XP SP3 and IE8 and had no problems logging in. I'm going to try Vista with IE8 next.

  • I should note that it was Windows XP 32 bit

  • I'm having the exact same issue on firefox and ie7 with a perfectly fresh install and no plugins enabled but no issue in clue why
