I made a quick wireframe applying some visual thinking to improve the way Elgg displays information in the default theme. I believe a better default visual style of Elgg will greatly improve its perceived value as a platform.
Mi idea is to spark some considerations about the design of the interface to make it easier for users to use it.
Please tell me what you think of it. And If you want, go ahead and modify it as you like.
(I made a little mistake with the number of columns, but you get the idea)

- Better arrangement of the profile information: Looks much cleaner
- Main areas of the community not hidden inside tools but rather as main navigation

I like that the edit buttons stand out. The columns now being the same width is a good thing. The cleaner topbar is nice.
What do you consider the most important improvements that you made?
Well, I consider these two as the most important:
Updated version. Fixed the columns, made everything cleaner.
My idea for this is to slowly incorporate some of the changes in the wireframe as well as move towards a more polished style for a default Elgg installation.
However, there is no "visual style" yet in these wireframes except for some rounded corners and subtle shadows.
