Step 4 of the INSTALL.txt file walks you through the "Install your crontab (UNIX ONLY)" process. After I made the necessary edits each of the non-commented lines got rejected by crontab for invalid/unexpected characters.
After a fair bit of time trying to get the crontab commands loaded, I elected to bypass this step so I could proceed with getting elgg up and running. I planned to come back to cron later and manually enter the cron commands. However, what's interesting is that there was no "/pg/cron/" directory in my download tar file.
Not sure if I have what I need for the cron jobs to even work.

You only need cron for garbage collection, log rotation, and similar admin tasks. If you just evaluating the platform, no need to spend time setting it up if you run into trouble. For more thorough instructions try the elgg wiki site.
