3.0 feedback

Hello,

I am testing 3.0. It’s very nice. The design is fantastic. I haven’t run into any major issues yet, but I would like to suggest a few improvements. I’m sure the developers are aware of some or all of these.

  1. The registration form will of course tell you if a username exists, but only after submitting the form. These days many sites let you know right after you type the username in. I think this should be in elgg core.
  2. Overall the CSS is good. But on mobile, after posting a new bookmark, in the activity stream, the user’s avatar is super tiny. So tiny that it looks like a bullet point. This is with the phone in portrait. If I flip the phone to landscape, so that everything is a little wider, the avatar is fine.
  3. There are a couple spots on the frontend and backend where, again on a mobile device, the page isn’t fully responsive. Many times it is simply due to buttons. The buttons don’t seem to want to go to the next line. They want to stay in a row no matter the screen size. One example is a user’s profile on mobile, where you can message someone.
  4. Although someone could create a plugin, I think eventually, changing the favicon from the backend should be a part of core. It is for many popular CMS systems.
  5. Maybe some type of registration spam control should be part of core?

I’m grateful to the core developers for continuing to make elgg amazing. Here’s to a very bright future for elgg!

  • Thank you for the feedback, but the best place to report issues is on GitHub https://github.com/Elgg/Elgg/issues.

You can also request features (like your suggestion for the registration form).

  • Hi @zerosandones,

thanks for your feedback. You have some valid points. Some are already mentioned as feature requests or bug reports. It would be nice if you take a look at https://github.com/Elgg/Elgg/issues and see if a feature request or bugreport already exists. If not, it would be great if you could create one per issue. This way we can keep track of all the issues.

  • Thank you both. I added a couple posts to the issues tracker. I did not add anything about registration spam because I see that's been discussed before. It sounds like most registration spam options involve third parties which I agree wouldn't be good for core. But, a bundled plugin wouldn't be a bad idea. An Akismet bundled plugin or something? Does Akismet work well? I've always used it with WordPress sites but, I don't really know how well it works.

I also realized, by looking at Jeroen's reply to this post, that there isn't core mentions support. I didn't add this to the tracker either because I saw it was already discussed. But, my opinion is, even if it is very basic and doesn't even notify the user at first, mentions is a key component for this type of platform. Like I said, it could be basic at first. Roll it out in phases. First make it so that you can mention someone and it links to their profile. Then, because I assume it's harder, work on the notification part for a separate release.
