You can get the 0.8 version of the event calendar here:
http://community.elgg.org/pg/plugins/kevin/read/262996/event-calendar-08-beta
This release fixes a bug in the plugin that made the previous version fail to work properly with Elgg 1.6.1.
It will work, however, with Elgg 1.5 and above.
In addition to several bug fixes, this version has numerous new features which can be toggled on in the event_calendar settings area under Tool administration.
This includes the often requested start and finish times.
See CHANGES.txt and README.txt for more information.

Hi Fred,
I'll be releasing the next version tomorrow. That might fix your problem.
I've also fixed the Next and Prev bugs by forcing the mode back to month for those, and hidden the Today link at the top of the calendar. As this discussion:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1073410/dont-work-today-button-in-jquery-datepicker
points out, Today does not actually do what people think it should do, and rather than patch the Datepicker core code, I've just hidden the link.
@Fred - I've put up a new release. I'm pretty sure that I fixed the bug you mentioned before putting out the 0.8 release, but please try 0.81 and tell me if it works for you.
