You could autogenerate emails based on username@yourdomain.com, but I would hardly discourage it. How are going to communicate with your users? What if they forget their password?

The "thing" keeps your site protected. There is much more to emails in the system than just validation. You should be able to communicate with your users.

Imagine you could register on Facebook without an email. You forget your password, what do you? Create a new account?
