Categories dropdown on toolbar?

Moving this discussion here from Elgg Ideas. Hope someone can help with this.

i have being trying to get my head around this but can't find a way to do this...
i would like to have a dropdown on the toolbar for Categories
there is no page i could link to that would show them even
 
e.g.
http://www.itison.tv/tribes/mod/categories/

i think so.. i don't know what you mean about 'universal' though.the cateogies that are assigned within the admin seem to be seperate on blogs & izap videos..
i see the categories are essentially just tags (master tags) and the search function will bring up result in all the areas of the site. i am looking for a way to have all the default categories appear in a dropdown and when one is clicked the search results page for that category are shown with it defaulting to All (sitewide)

the tags that are on the blogs are user defined. a user, when writing a blog, inputs the tags they believe will help searching later
izap videos is simular but also different. when embedding a video from someplace like utube, I believe it also pulls the tags in from there as well.
considering that after an amount of time there would be a huge amount of tags, having all of them on a drop down would be very confusing with a drop down menu specifically because the sheer amount of tags would cause the menu to be longer than the screen.
universal categories are a bit different in that an admin can set predifined categories that can be used throughout the site. You have to enable the plugin and then find where it states set site categories to input them. each category needs to be seperated by a comma. Then these categories will appear as a checkable option on anything being done on the site.

the categories mod that is included with 1.5 then?  that's what i am refering to.. just these in a dropdown.. i notice they don't appear on everything though.. eg  pages / polls
i like that izap imports the tags from youtube, but i usually clean them up as most of the time they are not relevent for proper organisation.
searching by tag is great for narrowing down search results but the categories are something which gives a good general overview.. and as they appeat in checkboxes it is a good way to save time entering the master tag, so to speak.
i would like that categories appear on every page to encourage people to properly organise the content. having a dropdown would make navigation much easier. i aim to keep the categories list small enough, say 10
 



well i know what the variable is, ill have to get back to you on this unless someone else chimes in.

@Dhrup sorry, my mistake.. add new page does have categories. there are some areas though which don't.. eg a categories for a group (rather than the pages within)
@Uddhava dasa  sorry, i thought this was the best place for this. it is an idea afterall. the dropdown i am talking about is to do with the overall navigation within an elgg install, which i hope would make it more user friendly.
