The provided .htaccess file causes the server to run 500 errors. Probably a syntax error in the htaccess and htaccess.dist files. Can't believe I am the only one. Anybody ran into (and solved) this?

What version? I've never had any issues and we haven't had any reports of it.
On some Apache configs you can't set Options in .htaccess. AFAIK there's nothing Elgg can do about this.
