New group request

hi

i would like a new group to be created, administered by me, in relation to public protection within elgg communities.

i offer a free plugin: MAPPA, which enables law enforcement to manage offenders in a similar way to the way they are managed in the real world, gather evidence and thereby directly protect the community, whilst enabling ex offenders to use social media for legitimate purpose. MAPPA also enables users to make non-urgent crime reports to their local police, and provides hooks for other plugins.

i offer free plugins modified to integrate MAPPA, such as karma, which now includes a new filter in which can alert local police to abusive comments immediately they are posted. And the bundled reportedcontent has been modified to include the username of the user making the report. IP tracker is also now MAPPA integrated, so IP information and log is accessible to MAPPA status users.

MAPPA, by the way, stands for Multi Agency Police Protection Arrangements - it is the infrastructure used by the UK authorities to manage ex offenders in the real world. The principles and functions can be applied to protect the users of any elgg site, anywhere on the planet. The functions can be extended to local police so that any suspect can be monitored, and unlawful activity gathered, noted and archived.. Not just that of convicted citizens.

Plans exist in British government circles to enact laws during the lifetime of this government, which will make this plugin (or something like it) an almost mandatory requirement for elgg sites operating within UK borders. Certainly every social network, on every platform, shall be required to integrate these functions and be more law enforcement friendly, when those plans become written into UK law, as they surely will.

I am registered as a potential tier II/III provider with the British Ministry of Justice, which means they have done their due diligence and enabled me to work with government contractors.

With that seriousness in mind, I am not taking a two tiered approach to the availability of the MAPPA plugin. There will not be a basic or demo MAPPA plugin with less functions made freely available alongside an all singing, all dancing commercial release. The full featured MAPPA plugin will be the only one available and will  always be free.

  • This seems like a noble task, given my limited knowledge of what you're trying to do, but I don't see the need for a group dedicated to this topic on the community site. I assume that's what you're proposing. We have too many groups as it is and recently have been trying to consolidate on fewer groups instead of expanding to more groups since more groups actually makes it harder to get help or discuss the thing you actually want to discuss.

Feel free to just post discussions on this matter in the "General Discussion" group for now.

The reason we need a group is to enable a focal point for MAPPA plugin announcements, support and discussion. It seems some people here want to dismantle the community, and scatter plugins and support far and wide. And Evan, I have never heard so much tosh in my life. Too many groups!? Groups make it harder? Oh please! Having groups enables interested parties to find and discuss their interests very easily! Tell you what, why don't I host this community? I seem to have a better understanding of just what a social network is. I host an elgg plugin repository and suggest every plugin should have its own group. I am suggesting it for MAPPA because those interested in all aspects, from site operators to plugin developers and law enforcement themselves would then know exactly where to get help and advice in relation to MAPPA, law enforcement, utilising the plugin in practice, what it means for admin's and users, and the functions available.. As well as providing feedback. This cannot be done within a plugin thread or general discussions. There are pages which need to be published, which cover these issues. I could do this on my own site, but as I am building a plugin for free distribution here, it makes sense to provide full and proper support without stealing traffic.. I.e without interested parties having to come and join my site. A group here would also clearly strengthen and demonstrate Elgg's commitment to online community safety.

  • > MAPPA plugin announcements, support and discussion

After we upgrade to 2.0 it will be possible for all plugins to act as containers for discussions so you can offer support and take feedback and such. If that is all you're looking for then happy to say it is on its way! Groups is not the right implementation for this, though, that's all.

Why are you reinventing the wheel? And I need to ensure that plugins have full group functionality which is open to everyone, not just admin. We need announcements, FAQs, page publishing, bookmarks, etc.. Not just comments and discussion threads. Therefore, groups are the perfect place for this.

For anyone else reading this thread, the MAPPA plugin and MAPPA integrated plugins, along with the original official MAPPA group and all documentation will all be available from my own elgg powered network only due to lack of interest here. My site is invitation only and includes a free email account.

i am also pulling my other published plugins from the elgg plugin repository and will not be distributing anything new here.

  • Rage quit? You cant get your own group here so are ditching us? Good riddance then....

  • @adc If you want to help other UK Elgg users, then we're glad to host your plugins and offer channels for support and discussion. That's the deal we can make at this time. Threats of taking your plugins hostage aren't really helpful.

If the real problem is that you don't want to spread plugin support conversations across two sites, then disable comments.

In the case of comments disabled, we should probably prominently display a message to try the plugin/project homepage for support. We'd be glad to take suggestions/PRs for improving the plugin repo UX.

I'm not taking my plugins hostage. You cannot take hostage what already belongs to you and which you are continuing to make freely available. The simple reason is that you have no interest in my project here and cannot yet provide what my plugin needs so it does not make sense to host things here. And I am not the first. Other developers have taken their plugin development and support to GitHub for example. So I don't see why yet again, I am seen as the bad guy. My loyalty to Elgg has been beyond reproach since my first installation, a number of years ago.this is not a rage quit. It's a simple case of forward planning, and higher standards. If the new plugin repo includes the functions needed, I may consider bringing everything back to where it rightfully belongs.

  • My bad, I assumed an "invitation only" site to mean not freely available. As for "hostage", consider that you've only mentioned pulling your plugins immediately after we declined to offer the group. Excuse me for misconstruing that series of events.

You're certainly right that the Community plugin repo is not the ideal hosting situation. We've got lots of ideas, but little time and it has to compete with improving the core product.

  • > The simple reason is that you have no interest in my project here

The fact that we don't provide special treatment for individual plugins does not therefore mean that we have no interest in them. I trust that reasonable readers of this conversation will understand that.

We want all different kinds of plugins here and appreciate everyone's participation in the community.

This conversation took an unexpectedly negative turn. Sorry it turned out that way...
