I think we need to start thinking about what happens if Elgg becomes really popular? What if, in addition to federating Elggs, that we are able to run Elgg as a giant cloud and be searchable as one? This is a totally different concept than federation.

That's interesting that you mention this..
The little presentation I had planned for ElggCamp Boston was going to be "MultiSite Design Concept", but I just changed it yesterday to "Distributed Elgg: Theoretical Design Concept". This -- extended from / off the "Federated Schools" idea....? hmmm... !
Sorry for messing up your thoughts and plans! ;-)
See you at the camp! No need for Skype... Make sure you get plenty of sleep - I think there will be plenty of lively discussion.
The wonders of collaboration... Your slides are due today Sir! (pressure)

I wrote the original notes for this early this year about the time Daniel and Fabrice fixed up the Multi-Site functionality --

Later I had a closer look at what that implied for Elgg, had a few different thoughts and basicallt was idly toying with the idea of forking Elgg into the Distributed Version, got too busy/ lazy and lefg it at my design notes phase. I had just wanted to talk with people for about 15 minutes from my notes and see what others think.
And LOLZ.. here you are.. already bouncing the same thoughts...;-)
( you *will be at ElggCamp ? right )
in reality all we would need to do is create an ELGG api call that can pull from different sites, anyone installing that feature would be in the hub... i am thinking about this the way computers are harnessed to work out pi
If only the internet and social media was available then... We may not be having this discussion today...

Anyway, my interest in this is not fame or glory, it is to help facilitate of collaboration to help speed up research on man's greatest challenges - I work for a cancer research hospital.
re; API calls

is where put my earlier topology schematics on "federated" schools sites. I will try to expand on these with more notes and details. ( you will get 404 if you click from here - hot link protect;-) --> cut/paste url )
I did write and test some API Elgg<-->Elgg code ( using XMLRPC ) to get 2 sites talking to each other... development dropped off along the way. I still the rest of API functions call designs though... need to get back to working that...
the only problem i see is that the way people go online outside of the schemers and dreamers is fairly established. The big social media sites are general purpose wonders and what any of us might be doing with ELGG is much more concentrated and focused in purpose.
So while a cloud concept is cool, in practice I would hope that in that connectivity I would have the option of selecting which of those cloud elements I could draw from. If I make dingo enthusiast site, it would hardly do any good to pull in blogs from a site dedicated towards underwater basket weaving.
I might be wrong. Your vision might be to be another general purpose social site and pulling from all sources would make a lot of sense.
but i do believe some kind of interELGGing could be very interesting. Education sites could benefit from all sorts of things between schools, is one example.
Ackshully...;-)
I just happened to call it "Elggucationally Federated School Sites". Rename to interELGG ==> the *same APIS will be there to interconnect the two Elgg sites...
Funny... some minutes after those posts above I got an email inviting me --
