Elgg Chat

I took the liberty of setting up a chatroom online at http://tlk.io/elgg

i thought it could be a nice place for people to hang around and talk about Elgg. There was a public chatroom before but that one is gone. Maybe there is a need for such a chatroom, so i'm inviting you all to join. See you there!

  • I think it could be a good idea. I was just there and it said a couple were online but no replies to what I posted. Unfortunately for any chat you have to have people to chat with.

It's the old problem of what comes first, the chicken or the egg. People won't go if there isn't anyone to chat with yet you need interaction (chatters) to be there to respond.

You either need a lot of traffic so people can drop in to chat or you might have a few people who want to have a private chat to discuss things. An example that comes to mind, three of us will be doing a motorcycle trip and want to discuss details of which route to take, which motel to stay at etc. A chat might be easier that emails back and forth.

  • There appears to be two popular chat scripts you can buy, Cometchat and Arrowchat. iionly just posted an updated version of the Elggchat plugin but warns of the server load particularly on a shared host, which I am running on.

Since my site is new with very few users I could probably get away with using Elggchat and if it became an issue with server load could switch at that time.

The chat you set up at http://tlk.io/elgg could be handy and is simple to set up but of course is quite limited.

I came across this website that lists some alternatives to Cometchat. It would be interesting to know if anyone is using any of them.
