How to truncate very long inputs by css ref. by Juho Jaakkola (sp. thanks to him) is a good solution in some cases but not suitable for breadcrumbs.
elgg_get_excerpt is needed for breadcrumbs but it apparently breaks Unicode characters

That's about 2 min worth of playing with css in firebug on this page...
.elgg-breadcrumbs > li > a {
white-space: nowrap;
width: 4em;
overflow: hidden;
text-overflow: ellipsis;
border: 0px;
}
The width attribute causes an extra long white space when entity names are short eg. Blog

Would max-width work?
Thanks, max-width seems to work (need to test more on all browsers) but how to tackle

the last word (file or blog or photo name) is not hyper-linked and so, goes down also
If I do this

white-space: nowrap;
width: 10em;
overflow: hidden;
text-overflow: ellipsis;
border: 0px;
}
long enitity and file-names (when both are long) get overlapped
