zimbra - another free social network app

someone asked me recently here what were some of the newer community apps that i had found.. i didn't post any links then. today i was looking for an email server app and found zimbra - which now has a social network app part to it. http://www.zimbra.com/products/zimbra-community/features.html
elgg designers might like to look at zimbra for inspiration in some senses. or not!

  • Well... the screenshots look not bad...

    But it's not really the same as Elgg - and will most likely never be - even if it would have all the same functionality. Why not? Because of it's license. Basically, it's a commercial product. There is a "free" edition. But the license of the free edition contains this term:

    the Software may be installed and used by You for
    the sole purpose of determining whether to purchase a
    license for a commercial version of the Software;

    So, thanks for the pointer. It's always good to see what else is going on apart from Elgg. But at least this one seems no alternative in any way.

  • Zimbra is a robust email and task management software. That Community feature looks more like FengOffice.

    FengOffice has a task management and document sharing feature that it would be good to implement in elgg.

  • @iionly: I think that license part applies only to the free trial and not the open source edition (see: http://www.zimbra.com/license/ also see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimbra).

    But yeah, not really the same as Elgg at all.

    Recently I had a short look at Zurmo, which is a bit of a hybrid between a social media platform and a CRM:

    http://zurmo.org/ (AGPLv3 licensed)

  • I had read the license of the "Free" version - not the "Trial" version. I missed that there seems to be still a difference between the "Free" and "OpenSource" version... Very complicated. Wikimedia mentions that the version >8.5 is licensed under GPLv2, but this seems not yet mentioned on the Zimbra site.

    Maybe the correct license terms would be included in the OpenSource package, but I'm not willing to register just to be able to download it.
