Can I start using Elgg 1.9 on a production site?

This might sound a little immature given that I have been using elgg for about two years. I think the hype is high for 1.9 to be released. Thats not my point though in this discussion but to ask those who are using it if they would recomend us to upgrade on a production site?

  • Well, what do you expect to get for an answer? Elgg 1.9 is not final yet, so asking about using it on a productive site isn't something you will get "Of course" as an answer right now. Before the final Elgg 1.9 is out a "Release candidate" will get released - already some known issues will not get fixed in it. So, waiting at least until the final release of Elgg 1.9 before starting to use it on a productive site is recommended.

Even with the final Elgg 1.9 out you might not be able to update immediately. It also depends on the plugins you use. If they won't work on Elgg 1.9 / have not get updated yet, you have to wait some more.

Nonetheless, testing the current Elgg 1.9dev version and reporting bugs wouldn't be a bad thing either. The more people test it the more bugs might get found. And the sooner they get fixed the sooner you can use Elgg 1.9 on a productive site without getting any problems.

  • Thanks man. You know I only use core plugins on my site www.uphondo.com and I just wanted to know about elgg 1.9 because some are reportedly now using it. I will just have to wait till it comes hey. Thanks man. you know the hype in this community. I was sparked by your news plugin now updated for 1.9 and the mobilize and the theme that I am using. If its all about supporting plugins then it isnt a problem at all. even tidy pics is now ready. But I will go with your advice. I dont want the risk

  • "Reportedly using it" means mostly "testing it" as far as I see the comments about Elgg 1.9 I read here so far.

Yes, I've released Elgg 1.9 versions of all my plugins already. When I started to upgrade and release the plugins for Elgg 1.9 I expected that Elgg 1.9 would very likely be already finished and released before I would be able to finish upgrading all plugins. I wanted to get them all working on Elgg 1.9 as soon as possible though to allow for upgrading existing sites that use them as soon as possible (to avoid the same to happen as after Elgg 1.8 was released - I STILL need to upgrade a couple of plugins I use on my Elgg 1.7 based site before I can upgrade it to Elgg 1.8... or maybe already straight to Elgg 1.9 by then).

While there are releases of my plugins available for Elgg 1.9 I would still not recommend upgrading a productive site to Elgg 1.9 yet. Of course, I hope there won't be any last minute changes in Elgg 1.9 anymore that might require changes in my plugins. But you never know. Maybe some serious bug gets found in Elgg 1.9. Still, as with the development version of Elgg 1.9 core I would appreciate any feedback about bugs found in any of my plugins. Better fix them now unhurriedly.

  • @iionly, FYI, productive and production are different things

@valentine, glad the hype is high. We are trying to close out the last few blockers. Please do test out the latest dev version, but we can't really recommended for production yet, unfortunately.

I know, it's been too long with too much waiting. We appreciate your patience and any testing assistance you can lend. We're also working on very important changes to our release process to make it easier for us to turn around releases much faster in the future, so hopefully this 2.5-year release cycle won't happen again...

  • @Evan: what is the difference then between a productive site and a production site?

So far, I only came across the term "productive site" only in connection with websites. "Productive" in the sense of "not only for testing", a site that is used for real, a "live site". I did miss that it was asked about using Elgg 1.9 on a production site (production site as in "production facility" / "manufacturing plant"?). Still I think meaning the question was aiming at is what I was trying to answer in my reply.

  • "production site" is the correct terminology for a live site with real users.

You understood him correctly. You were answering the right question. "Productive site" just looks funny in the context you're using it, so I figured I'd mention it.
