In views/default/page_elements/header_contents.php the look of the site header is defined. You can override this view with a your own version that you modified according to your needs. This is necessary, if you don't want a text link to be used at all.
Also, the css file of Elgg views/default/css.php contains the style definition for layout_header. You could modify the "background" to display an image behind the site name link.

As iionly said, copy the views/default/page_elements/header_contents.php file to a theme (mod/mytheme/views/default/page_elements/header_contents.php) and replace line 18 with the html tag for an image.

after some big reading and also tests, i have sucessfully got the image as a banner instead of text and also made it clickable aswell
