Thanks in advance for reading through and offering me some suggestions:
I have a brand new install of elgg 1.8.8 on my MediaTemple shared web hosting. I managed to go through the installation wizard with no problems (well, I got a warning about open_basedir setting, but I see things are being written in the data directory, so I assume the warning is not an issue).
When I navigate the installation I often (but not always) get system messages rather than web pages.
I have tried:
*uninstalling/re-installing
*re-downloading the installation from elgg and deleting/redoing the installation from scratch
*changing where I install
*deleting/recreating the database & reinstalling
*disabling plugins
...and 2 days later I am stumped.
Like I said, it doesn't always give a system message, sometimes it works correctly. So you might have to register and use the site for a bit to see what I'm talking about. Here are some examples of system messages I get:
When I go to the home directory:
{"output":false,"status":0,"system_messages":{"error":[],"success":[]}}
When I invited myself to join (different email accounts):
{"output":"","status":0,"system_messages":{"error":[],"success":["Your friends were invited."]}}
Does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The website is located here:

Ok, a little update. If you go to the website using the link, it seems to forward to http://www.researchpipeline.com/network/activity. But if you delete the "activity" part of the http address and reload I seem to always get the system message:
But the forwarding issue can't just be it, because the system message thing happens in other places too. For example, I just logged out to try to create a new account and got this message:
When I confirm the email address for a test account:
When I try the "report activity" button, again a blank screen with the plain text:
Is your data folder outside the elgg folder? Any third party plugin? Do you have another CMS installed under your site? What version of PHP?

Thanks for getting back to me!
*Yes, my data folder is outside the elgg folder
*No 3rd party plugins
*I have a completely separate WordPress blog (database is separate too): http://www.researchpipeline.com/wordpress/
*PHP 5.3.27 FastCGI -- If you think that might be the problem I could potentially switch to 5.5.6?
It that is helpful makes a situation more pleasant or more easy
Try using PHP 5.4 or 5.5
I've been using your site and no issues so far. Did you fix it?

Works for me, what was the issue? Help the next person who runs into this please
It works, please clear cache of your web browser!
I'm still getting system messages, but not on the home page. Can someone please try registering a new account, then loggging in and out with that account? Maybe try to do something like upload an avatar too. If you are getting webpages instead of system messages, then it must be a browser issue. Here's the system message I just received when I made a tester account, then logged in/out:
