Any solutions or strategies for "Spammer caught" attacks on site?

My Web host is reporting two to three "Spammer caught" attacks per minute on my site in addition to loading my inbox with tens of thousands of messages (with the email addresses of those making the spam attempts).

I'm basically being spam bombed. My host is blocking the attempts, but it affects site performance, nonetheless.

Are there any strategies for dealing with this, or reducing the impact to site performance?

  • @ BucksandBrains, Blocking the attempts or hammer and site performance! It sound to me that you might need to install Elgg Hammer to keep your spammers at bay... I hope there are several tools to fight spammers especially the automated ones or bots..When the spammers hit your register page or refresh it 3 times per second, they will be greeted by "A nice page to read for a few seconds..." Try it and let me know how it goes...

  • Thanks, I looked at the elgg Hammer description.

I haven't upgraded to elgg 1.8 yet. I have a trademark application pending and I need the site to work and look as it did when the trademark application was first submitted. I'm a little worried about upgrading to 1.8 and having it not work the same for a few days (until I get used to the new version and can add and configure new plugins). It would NOT be good if the site were down (or wonky) the very day the trademark examiner looks at it, so... I will wait a bit, upgrade, add Hammer, and then leave some feedback on how Hammer works on my site.

  • BucksandBrains, When I was testing the Elgg Hammer, I only tested Elgg Hammer on Elgg 1.8 and I don't know how Elgg Hammer will work with other version of Elgg. Hope your trademark application gets approved and then upgrade your site to latest versions of Elgg 1.8 and then 1.9 and enjoy all the new features of Elgg Hammer and other cool plugins straight out of the box...
