Updating plugin from 1.5 to 1.8/9?

I think this might be a very interesting functionality for my site:

(also for listing groups)
But I am unsure how difficult it would be to get running on Elgg 1.8...
I have seen this: http://docs.elgg.org/wiki/Updating_plugins_for_Elgg_1.8
But maybe someone can give me some quick tips so that I avoid unecessary errors?
