I installed elgg in a subdirectory, but it is not working. When I try to log in or go to any page I get a 404 or get redirected to homepage.
Any ideas? I know it is on beta but I want to try this version right now

Try to replace .htaccess with 1.8 version and also check you paths in database.

I tried that yesterday, didn't work. I always get a message saying:
"Update .htaccess to remove pagehandler"
Path on databases are more than ok, that's the first thing I checked.
I've a 1.9 test installation running in a subdirectory, so I don't think it fails to work at all. Have you set RewriteBase in .htaccess correctly? I don't think you should use the Elgg 1.8 .ht_access as there are some changes.
@iionly
Yes I set RewriteBase like this first:
Didn't work. Then Like this:
Didn't work either. I didn't use it, just tested the 1.8 htaccess for learning purposes because I don't know what I'm missing.
Here's the .htaccess:
http://pastebin.com/9RgGrC72
It seems there's no significant difference in htacces between 1.8 and 1.9, so it should work.
You did set AllowOveride All for the Elgg install directory, didn't you?
The 1.8 and 1.9 .htaccess files are different. In 1.9 almost all requests go through /index.php
Sorry my fault. I compared the 1.9 htaccess with the file uploaded to pastebin assuming the pastebin file is the 1.8 htaccess. Indeed, the 1.8 and 1.9 htaccess files are quite different.
It is a live site. So what should I do to get it working?
@rj I had this problem a few weeks ago getting the same error messages, and used rewritebase to make it work. But it turned out to be a capital letter issue. My subfolder was named Elgg-1.9, when I changed E to e it worked. Just in case ...
I have no idea what's going on. I did the install several times. So... what should I do?
