I was working on a Social Networking site which needs to be run in French also but it looks like Elgg does not support French as yet. Just wanted to know what will it take to make the site French compliant in terms of development and efforts.

Based on the list given by Alexander, core 1.5 does not have the French Translations. The site you have given certainly is in French so I would like to know if French is a part of the core built in language or has your friend applied a language pack plugin or has he put in the efforts from his side to make it French compliant.

Hi Vineet, as Dhrup said, we have started an elgg french community on elgg.elgg.fr  with more than 400 members. You will get there a translation of the 1.5 core and of some other plugins. If you dont want to join the french community, You can find these translations on elgg.org too, the same guys that have worked on translation on the french community site have also set up a group here : http://community.elgg.org/pg/groups/29140/traduire-elgg-15-en-franais-/

@Dhrup . i'd love to see elgg in Arabic too .. if tehre is no current Arabic language pack yet .. could someone guide me to how can i make one? i'm no developer.. i'm a designer but i'll do what i can

There are several Elgg Sites that do have Arabic - I have seen in passing...
I wonder why those site owners do not come back here to post their language packs !!!

I know some human rights group that would like to use arabic on their Elgg site too..
you can also have my rough googled trans arabic of base elgg lang file.

i think i wanna start my very own arabic translation from scratch.. so if you could tell me what files should i edit and tools i should use i'll start on  ..... and can i make elgg support english and arabic at same time so if the user can't understand english good enough can i give him the ability to choose arabic language interface and vise versa?

The Google translate tool (ie:  http://Google.com/translate) could be helpful in your translation work.

Google also launched Rosy (aunt-rosie@appspot.com) on Google Wave for real time conversational translation. 

I am not aware if Google allows Rosy to be used outside of Google Wave, but I do know waves can be posted to third party sites via RSS feeds.
