I was thinking it'd be nice if there was an elgg IRC channel. I'm aware there is a freenode one, but nobody is on there. Would you go on it if I was to make a channel?

maybe
I'm not sure if I'd be on either...
There was an official(?) channel once but it was meant mainly for discussing Elgg core development. There was a scheduled meeting every week. I suppose nowadays Github makes communication easy enough so there isn't really a need for an IRC channel anymore.
k
that channel was the official 2 years ago, even Brett (http://community.elgg.org/profile/brett.profitt) was always there helping to the people; but now the community is dying...
i would use an elgg chat space, yes.. irc or even a skype 'room'
I wouldn't say the community is dying, elgg is going quite strong from my perspective. Much of the development communication has moved to github though, as it's a better tool for the job.
only skype currently supports the moonie emoticon.. so github has some catching up to do there. ;) lol
Well, I think it is better to use the community for support rather than IRC, so that we can all benefit from problems/solutions. It is easier to find support here rather than IRC
