Hi, i would be curious what People think is an ethical donation to an App. If some one pays me $500.00 to install an App i would only donate 1% $5.00. i charge $3000.00 to do a unique theme shopping cart site and if i use drupal and zen-cart i would send each $15.00 do You think this is to much or not enough or just right?

Ok, here's the thing.. if I charge $5000 for a site with a cart and a newsletter script and use 2 free scripts for that.. I still work long hours to build the site, design the look and feel and integrate those applications... If I have to give $2500 out of my pay towards the apps then I would undercut myself. Secodnly, why pay $2000 for a shopping cart script when you can buy a 'top of the range' cart script for about $500??
In my opinion, $100 donation is good.. The developer of those applications don't expect much more than that anyway considering that thousands of their software is downloaded everyday.. Add to that, their fee from commercial licenses that get used on CPanel and Fantastico.. etc.

I disagree with you adclose2, people who are into open source and free software aren't in it for the money. I am talking from experience, I'm leading a well-established open source project (in another field than Elgg) and if everyone who used it or provided services based on it like integration/install and would have given me 50% of what he charged I'd be one rich man today...
Simply put, I think any developer would appreciate any amount for your donation Carlos, whatever sum it is.

Liran.
Yeah +1 for liri. Any amount will be appreciated. I had been developing a few freeware applications, and even $1 was enough to make me glad, as it was a sign showing people appreciated and seriously followed my work.

I agree $1.00 $5.00 or $20 but no more than this
