I am looking into sms-enabling Elgg sites..
This will address
Marcus Povey has already described Elgg's ability to do this.. but I do not intend to "compete" with CurveRider's services.
When I am finished the SMS PlugIn will be available for free to non-profit Elgg-sites.

No i mean to say riverdashboard comments like in facebook.......
This is almost all the interest I see in SMS. If y'all want SMS - ask, fund, contribute...
I'm interested in SMS. Are you working with outgoing or incoming to elgg - or both? About funding, how much and where?
@mnrtrq, for river comments I use a modified version of the river_comments plugin.
Thanks but can u share link? Thanks again

Just ran across this discussion.
I have a drop-in replacement plugin for SMS->elgg that has been supported in the core since at least 2 years ago. This functionality had existed for a while and there are hooks into the core that have been maintained. The problem is that Curverider while listing the class as gpl has never released this to the public. The replacement I made basically works like the twitterservice and only pushes to the wire (mood and media also supported). The limit to 160 characters isnt real as most of these services will split it into chunks and just send more messages (this isnt ideal so i never used pushing messages back to the client at all).
I really didn't realize there was this much interest in this, and havent had time to keep coding on this, but I always planned on incorporating it as a notifications plugin as well (along with my xmpp.>elgg plugin as well). My current version is being used on 1.8svn but I have had it working since 1.6 with little to no changes so I don't expect it would be a big deal to support them still.
How many developers here would like to work on such a system for notifications? I would be willing to work with others on this if so.
Hi bman,
basically I am a .Net Developer and from couple of months i am playing with elgg, now i am bit comfortable with Php and i am very much interested to participate in the development of SMS feature in Notifications plugin .
After almost 500 days of talking..
There are some misunderstandings regarding SMS enabling Elgg that need clearing up -->
People usually show a lot of interest in "SMS" and profess great interest in
helping with the code and also with "funding".
Until this day I have not heard nor seen any real takers..
only those who are waiting on the sidelines waiting for free handouts ;-)
The one real reason that keeps me holding off
from developing substantive code to handle SMS on Elgg is...
It's quite easy to code the necessary logic to send out notifications via SMS --
If your site is a dinky-doo several thousand registered users only.
Our site FbfKids.Com has 146,000 users
and if we were to send out SMS's it would take several days of non-stop processing
-- this will not be workable with your traditional dinky-doo $5 shared hosting..
Some people might remember the long delays on the Elgg community
when adding a new comment not too far ago !
Elgg.org switched off mass notifications because of that !
SMS is easy but.. do you have server to handle the crunch ?
yep... funding... no one talks when someone mentions $$$ lolz
We did it because there is an API that cell phones companies in my country offer to starter companies =)
