This is a UK based company who provide a SMS Gateway for web-enabling SMS functionality via Web Service, HTTP(S) Service and SMTP Service and their provide their ToolKit with API for PHP as well other languages. They do charge for SMS out from a web-site BUT SMS inwards is FREE.

I made an SMS Plugin with a API from a carrier in switzerland and Germany.
Send messages from elgg to users an groups. Doodle style meeting organisation SMS newschannels.....
Its easy to send and recive SMS an interact with elgg.

But a have an external DB witch store users and numbers from my facebook application.
Now i lookin for implementing general notifications like mail an IM.

hmm. just met someone here who seems to be quite an expert with sms & java. we might collaborate and revive interest on this topic.

Anyone that wants to help with testing SMS enabled Elgg code - I will setup a test site with some sample methods to send SMS notifications. Those willing to give their time will need to put in some fair effort with the design approach and be able to use their own Mobile number for test SMS messages. The test site will be a closed site. I will setup user ids for those willing to take part.
