Share your Top 10 plugins

The Elgg plugin directory, for now, isn't as helpful as it could be at leading users toward the best 3rd party plugins available.

Metrics like most downloaded/recommended can be useful, but I personally prefer to see opinionated "top N plugins" lists by other Elgg site owners/devs. I always find gems in these lists that don't happen to get prominent placement in the plugin directory, and of course a lot of devs post quality plugins in online code repositories that they just haven't formally released for whatever reason.

So my suggestion:

  • Make a new page in your user account (go here and hit Add page)
  • Title it "Favorite Plugins" or similar
  • Tag it with "topplugins"
  • List your favorite plugins and optionally a description of what they do and what makes them add so much value to your network or make your life easier :)
  • If you want, post a link to your page in the comments

I see no reason to limit it to 1.8 plugins if there are older plugins you really miss. Some developers are looking for projects to cut their teeth on and reviving useful plugins is a great way to jump into the deep end while earning cred and karma!

  • I can't use your thing Dhrup - the interface is just awful.  It might work great on the back end but it looks like a mid-90's geocities page.  I have about 3 seconds of tolerance for it before my eyes are telling me to GTFO.  If you're going to the trouble of building it why not make it nice?

  • Geocities LOL that brings back so many memories.

  • that's the fuzzy areas where i was hoping
you'd be ready to jump in to contribute with
your heavy-weight design experience to help
create something that not only worked well
with the data gathering functionality but also
looked rather sexy on the outside at the same time ;-P
we could work as a tuned team.

    " might wanna
code some websvcs to receive data
from my form input to save @here
    and report for everyone.. "

  • I can help with theming :)

  • ThX Cim..;)
I just ddn;t care to bother when coding quickly
    about the perfume & makeup;
    the *data seemed more critical.
and so - you've got the only quick
    searchable sortable elgg plugins index
with a face that may look like the 90's;oO
but the data collection, analysis, dissemination
=> all there - as those in the business say
    " content is king "
e.g try a search for 'messages' @ here
and @ my geocities clunky interface?
if you read the 1st line right at the top ->
' The Elgg plugin directory, for now,
isn't as helpful as it could be at leading
users toward the best 3rd party plugins available. '

  • i am waiting for matt to contact me @pm with details of which areas of the interface he wants to help with coding to make better for everyone.
if options fall short it can always be GDFK decommisioned.

  • Sorry Dhrup, but that's not even on my radar for priorities - I was just making a suggestion - like I get on my plugins all the time.  You know the ones:

"Hi I really like your plugin, now make all of these changes to fit my exact specifications right now kthx"

    :D

  • ohhhh ;-o( i read yr comments wrongly ;-} i thougt you were volunteering your time to fix the UI.
i was just putting in my 5 cents worth for Steve Clay's top of this page request about the lack of feedback data on plugins b/c what's here doesn't cut it to push forward for anyoine - elgg users nor core team. what i've got works to capture that missing data. it is not for my use but for the core team to be better informed on general users views and critique @plugins. i reckon i've done my share for elgg's  plugins respo search & feedback; hope others will make time to help out also to give back.

  • oh shtz cwapz! unlike v.1 cpl of years backk
    ppl are actually using this v.2. my plugin index;
i see fair number of reviews..

oki.. i gonna look closer into the code to bounce
back out the grades/ratings back to the mainpage
    for better sorting, maybe link-to read reviews @plugin;
and all presented in glorious 90's geocities ui with the
22nd century ux and data management a la scoopz.

well, let's just.. keep using this, hammering your faves
and gradings so as not 'to use it or lose it' and we hope
something usefull comes out of all effort y'all put in.

i *might build in that direct download link i've been
thinking about form before, maybe a fuller description
fetcher off here to read directly and.. whatever else
sounds like a good idea at the time, any time.
