How to write default text like thewire @username

Hello please i don't know how to explain. But i think the below makes some sense.
How can i add default text to show when someone wants to edit a field e.g @username as shown in thewire.

I can't seem understand what that plugin does.
Anyway is like you don't understand what i want. Let me go straight to the point. I want to write http:// in a field so when a user wants to write a website address he/she has no need to write the http:// part.
e.g
echo elgg_view('input/text', array(
'name' => 'fieldname',
'value' => 'http://',
));
