River Activity Entries - How to enable comments for existing ones and new ones?

Perhaps I am dreaming of a perfect world. lol, but is there a way to enable comments on every single existing river entry? or Do this can only be achieve for future entries? I found the following.

You must log in to post replies.River items were designed to represent events, and not all have a logical entity (needed to host the comments, usually an ElggObject). In hindsight we realized we should have made river items entities themselves, but that transition is only in planning.
An experienced Elgg programmer could replace built-in river item types with new ones that always reference an ElggObject. Each of those could receive comments.
