Why don't some groups make their own version of Elgg?

I think he/she means forking and starting a different flavour. I guess the main reason is that Elgg is modular so you can flavour the hell out of it using plugins.
the minds team created a fork of elgg that uses cassandra and has other optimisation. they claimed they would 'soon' release the code to the web as open source... then when they got exposure in the mainstream they quietly stopped advertising that and never released it. they have changed minds quite a lot since then, so i don't know how much they still use elgg code.
yeah true , @urasoul the minds.com team made lots of customization on the elgg core in minds.com alpha version.but i still think they(minds team) still use elgg because the structure of links are still elgg-like...example, minds.com/login ..minds.com/register ..minds.com/groups/featured.but i think they customised elgg to their own taste.
@Naol-Eon the minds.com team flavoured the hell out of elgg in minds.com alpha(not sure if minds.com beta is based on elgg) which uses cassandra AngularJs and other server side optimisations and elgg code customisations...therefore you and your team can bring out the best in elgg too. GOODLUCK!!!
