Hello,
With your experience or knowledge, what is betterdo you think?
to install as a subdirectory? e.g. elgg.mydomain.co
or as a subdirectory? mydomain.co/elgg
Is there a difference technically? What is industry standard? What is more normal?
Thank you

You must log in to post replies. For better SEO results, it is better to install in the main domain, rather than subfolder.
You mean as mydomain.co?
I prefer to use Wordpress as front page. It is so easy and you can do so much nicer front page with it. So for elgg, my choice is between sub-domain or sub-directory really...
It's not a problem having Wordpress in root and Elgg in a subdirectory. You can do that if you want.
Thank you Per Jensen!
Do you have any information why elgg instead used subdomain* community.elgg.org?
Sorry, don't know. Maybe one of the core devs can fill in.
If you upload elgg install direct to root folder / httpdocs/html/www/ etc... it should (will) always default to (once install is complete) www.mydomain.com etc.... it will only install to a sub dir / folder if u choose it. So as standard your install / address will always be www.mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com/activity
As a general rule, using subdomain is way more flexible and often simpler. You can scale or distribute services among different machines in very natural way. Also configuring ie. nginx for subdomains makes it easier to keep tidy configuration and not mix them up. It's simple and good solution.
Only use case for subdirectories is when it's not worth and easy to setup subdomains for particular install, ie. local dev install where you set up and tear down installs often or making subdomain on top of your lan domain starts to become ridiculous elgg.computer-x.intranet.company.com :-) It will keep it's downsides anyway.
I see no reason why you'd want to use subdirs on a production site. Keep it simple.
Thank you much to all of you for your help!
