Mobile is the new PC! Being able to see activity as well as post status, blog and upload photos on the go will make Elgg more convenient and will enhance its usefulness. Having an out of the box support for iPhone and other mobile device either through a web browser or dedicated client will be awesome. The Wordpress xmlrpc with an iPhone app is a good example. The WP touch plugin which allows for an iPhone formatted page using the iPhone browser is also a good model to follow.

@Alex thanks for the cross referencing.
I had totally forgotten about this thread.
recap on the cross reference: http://demo.homecliq.com
I am working a mobile switching theme. Nothing too exciting to report yet as far as dramatic differences when on a mobile device, but I seem to have a good foundation working. On my demo/test site I have a variable echoed out in the header that says off or on depending on whether its mobile or not.
inside, on the left, I have a rather ugly looking (on purpose) output of the menu system. If you are on a pc you should see all the menu options that would be under the tools dropdown menu, and if your on mobile, those should be contained in a form drop down selector (because smartphones are being designed to fly out with these and it makes mobile navigation a cinch).
I would really appreciatte feedback from anyone, especially if you have a phone with a browser. *Note: I am not trying to make a mobile theme to work with all phones. My thoughts are that what is near the peak technology will quickly become the norm so things like iphones, curves, pre, and G1 and G2 or any other android based phones are the target.
I have already confirmed that it the variable is working with my iPhone, an Android emulator, and an older blackberry that can fully render a website in the browser.
i have been continuing to theme.
http://demo.homecliq.com if anyone is interested. there are now some definate differences going on between either a mobile or pc based viewing of the site, although not on the initial index.
I have user validation by email turned off if you happen to have a mobile device or emulator and want to see what it is I am working on.
Well, I couldn't wait for other iPhone plugins, so I wrote my own! This is my first contribution so be gentle!
