What Are The Biggest Elgg-based SITES

This is to replace my earlier post.. the ("quantum") singularity of the language has been revised.. It will be interesting to exchange experiences and issues and "scalability" aspects related to implementing Elgg or social networking sites beyond the hobbyist $4/mth ISP level to those levels where one just has to be thinking $500 - $1000 / month dedicated. We ourselves have much data from our experience which we can "share" for the community.

  • ...ah! Now then. You see, I use a different strategy - maybe that's where I'm going wrong.

Almost the entire contents of my sites are set to 'Public' - I see that your content is hidden until you become a member.

    Maybe I expose too much?

  • Oh and one I forgot all about. My puppy lovers community http://pojico.com

  • Mick... what is your objective?  What are you trying to do with your sites? What do you want to give to your site members?

People will try  your site if they are looking for it and can find it.   If it looks useful and interesting they may join to try it out or out of curiosity, but it really has to have something to bring them back... getting them to register means little, and indeed, it can be really annoying to register and be dissapointed by the content.  It certainly does not mean they will feel the need to come back, there has to be more, afterall, there is no shortage of new social networks, they crop up every second.

As far as making a living out of social networks, I guess it is possible, and many probably do, but it is not so easy... the market is pretty saturated.  FBK seems to be doing well in terms of stickyness and number building, it would be interesting to know what their income stream looks like, but even with 50K plus members it is still small.

A friend of mine did a website for a local "Escort Agency" and hosted it too... it had 250k visits each month, but the owners still could not make it all work.  The local builders merchants get 70k visits per month... but it all means nothing unless they stay and spend.

  • @all -- FK is *not not small ;-)

  • @Dhrup.De.Scoop I just checked your site, now I know how you got those numbers :)

  • oki... y'all.... it is not so much about the name and fame and money.. at the end --> everytime I am informed re: record breaking signups per day (e.g. 500..1000 new users) -- i just do not have the time to look at the $$$'s because.. that's the signal for me to rush away and check the (Linux/Centos) server power and performance and make some serious decisions on what upgrades are needed next.
