I am trying to gain an understanding of the mod and pg directories, I would like to make them consisistent across the site, for example I would like to elimintate "mod" from the url by replacing the variants that occur between mod and pg pages, with pages that will display under the "pg" directory.

Ahh ajax...it's always you.
There have been a few discussions about best practices for ajax. I do see the organizational benefit from the plugin POV of keeping ajax action endpoints in the actions directory, but it's a bit odd as far as overall Elgg is concerned.
Brett - I didn't read through the discussion to see that you've switched from discussing /pg/ and direct call to files in a plugin's directory to actions. We don't put our ajax endpoints in /actions/. I was concerned that you're thinking of preventing a plugin from making direct calls to any file under /mod/
I think, Just encouraging better module development, perhapse, rating plugins. and fixing the core plugins to not escape the page handler.
