I just noticed that with Elgg 1.7.6 the data directories are "not writable" with 775 permission on linux. giving it 777 permission fixes it.
Just wondering, is it normal?

You must log in to post replies. The 775 permission means that other than the owner and the group of the files and no one else can write into the directory.Hence if elgg data directories are not writable with 775 permission,I guess it should be normal.Even the elgg installation README states that you should change the permissions to 777.
you should set it to 755, not 775 and especially not 777.
Permissions concern what user the server is running as, too.
