I'm looking for some opinions and perhaps testing experiences on Elgg v1.8 ? We're considering going live with Elgg.1.8 for some of our elgg-sites.. The tests I've done myself (on XAMPP) seems to show v1.8 as being rather cool stuff. I will be loading some of out newer live elgg-sites with v1.8 sometime soon. I wonder if the Elgg Team have some soon in the future date to certify v1.8 for open release ??

1.8 is still under development. Don't use it.
I like 1.8! Looking forward to it!
Grabbed the latest Feb SVN copy of 1.8 to play ;-)
Hmmm...
seems quite some internal thingies are changed/ updated ;-P
First thing comes to mind ->
There's a buit-in "Likes" feature, but no "Dislike" button '-(
And so me I wanna play with coding this into 1.8 to
see how some new play code swings with the new 1.8 looks;;;;O)
Reading thru the area of the code that deal with the theming..
I wonder how much "fun" we'll have with all those "older" Elgg themes..
will any of them.. work in 1.8 ? ;-)
i love 1.8, the anticipation is killing me
Elgg v.1.8 Theming LOLZ ;-) but.... the PlugIn code still works correctly ;-)
lol of course all themes need a lot of redesigning. did you read this?

Hmmm.. Reviewing some of the internal code restructures, I believe the question is not quite one of "anticipation", but are we (mostly the 'developers') ready for v.1.8 ?
I'm not yet in the belief that one should expect a "rush" of new PlugIns, Themes, etc ;-) unless there are some out there toiling ways past midnight, reading the v.1.8 code to be prepared..
Forget just the css framework.. ! the code structure style will take some getting used to.
Is version 1.8 the right name if it contains such big changes that old plugin doesnt work.
Shouldnt it then be version 2.0?
May we have some more screenshots :)
Frederik,
Elgg is rapidly evolving.
the Elgg team has always signified major releases by changing the *second* digit. (1.1, 1.2, 1.5, 1.6. 1.7, 1.8 etc.)
Typically major releases introduce large changes that often require recoding plugins.
Also, it is quite typical for plugins for other open source projects (eg. Drupal) to lag major releases by 6 months or more. So just because a release is made, you should not assume that the plugins you want to use will work with it (right away and maybe not ever).
You need to carefully test the latest plugin releases with the Elgg release you have selected before you go ahead with a particular set of plugins.
