So I hadn't logged into my site for a few days and then when I did I discovered I had 5962 spam comments on my admin blog. I tried to delete the user but get HTTP 500 server errors because the request apparently takes too long to complete. Any suggestions? How can I get rid of them?

Just discovered they also posted approximately 42,000 individual spam blog posts as well. If there is no way to delete them due to the volume of posts this is very bad.
remove their user from the file mananger in your hosting domain.
Sorry mrcoffee but I don't follow. What would there be in file manager associated with the user?
go to user profile and delete
Thanks Liang, but that is exactly where I get the HTTP server 500 error.
you are getting 500 error?
Yes, if you are unfamiliar with it here is the message text: HTTP 500 Internal Server Error
This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying.
Hi Liang, to answer your email the "500" error occurs when I goto the user profile and click delete.
I can't be the only person this has happened to before right?
If you look at this problem for a larger persepctive, it is absurd that those of us that administer ELGG sites have to put up with so much spam. We spend ages flushing it out and deleting rogue users. I'm pleading for an efficient way of blocking or flitering out such posts or users. It seems to me that the answer lies in the registration process. These spammers have to register. To the best of my knowledge the latest version of ELGG does not include mechanism for admins to vet registrations and none of the existing pluggins that we've tried do the job very well. If someone out there has a solution, I'm all ears. But I am convinced this should be part of the core ELGG features.
