I've talked to Evan about boosting the process of making elggs default theme responsive. It would be interesting to hear what the general opinion is.
The starting point is the preservation of the theme as it is now and use media queries. However, with some appropriate modifications that meet the handheld screen. It will also require a javascript if the explorer must be supported and some js for touch functions.
I have put a demo online here. Let me know what you think.

@gillie Weird, I wasn't able to reproduce the problem on another Lumia. So no worries, the bug isn't related to Elgg or the responsive theme.
dear all, i've been trying to open http://www.perjensen-online.dk/showroom/responsive/, but the page said nothing is found. Is the content have been removed?
Thanks
@aisya Yes the content has been removed. You can use this link below to have a look at the responsive idea,

Just select responsive and load.
This project has been delayed for various reasons, but not forgotten.
There's some discussion about making this responsive theme default one in 1.9: http://www.perjensen-online.dk/sandbox/
Discussion it on google groups list: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/elgg-development/fvCLvRSl-Ck/discussion
Please have a look at this theme, test it on devices you have and share your opinion.
that responsive layout in the sandbox is great..
i am currently completing a plugin that ajaxes all the tabs in elgg..
does anyone have any comment on when the responsive design and site ajaxing is likely to be a core feature?
if ajaxed tabs are coming soon then i will put less focus on perfecting the plugin for 1.8.
