My new Elgg social network (SimplyFair.net) was hit by spammers this morning. They erased my members and put 10 of their own in instead. Two of them were active when I went to the site, which was really spooky. My developer was able to erase them and restore my members. But she's asked me to consult with you folks to see if there are plugins or other means of combatting this menace. Would appreciate your help.
My developer says her company's servers are being hit regularly by spammers, apparently from China. Looks like they think they can have a field day with social networks here. We're going to be adding a captcha to our site. But are there other resorts?

Another good anti-spam plugin is Math Captcha -- no one registered spammer :)
Forked branch: https://github.com/RiverVanRain/Elgg-Math-Captcha-plugin
Then there's my spam throttle plugin, which works in conjunction with the two already listed - it's designed to catch spammers once they've entered the system: http://community.elgg.org/plugins/821368/1.5/spam-throttle-18x
@Matt Beckett that's right ! Very good solution ;) Recommended for TC
Also, you should consider Akismet plugin for elgg 1.8

SPAM Login Filter really gets the job done. These others I haven't needed to try, haven't had any issues with the bots since I installed the Login Filter.
need to be some serious analysis to figure how too many months have gone with zero spam at fkkids.com; makes me wonder what i did right, b/c we got no antii-spam plugins.. just plain eye-balling ;oO and occassional deletes. blogs, pages, groups = all clean !;)
Dont know how you pulled that off DhrupDeScoop, after 2 days of my elgg being up, I had a spammer posting blogs about cheap ciggerettes.
OMG, these people don't joke. I haven't even gone live yet (haven't announced my site anywhere) and my first member is a spammer posting about fake wigs from Lakeland Florida, LOL :)
are you using any of the recommended anti-spam plugins? They're all mentioned in this thread.
good luck with those smart-s-pam bozos! i'm moving down after 11 years away back to sunny temperate nice weather florida as soon as i can sell off my place up here in cold-er eastern shores! ;-oO;P
