Core team vote: release frequency for patch and minor releases

Consensus from http://community.elgg.org/discussion/view/1650225/how-regularly-would-you-like-to-see-releases-happen seems to be that people want more frequent releases but weekly is too aggressive. 2-4 weeks has been thrown out several times. This vote is just to get clarity on how we want to proceed.

In any case, releases will be skipped if:

  • There are no bugs fixed since the last release.
  • There are unresolved blocking issues.

For patch releases

Prefer a 2-week cycle:

  • Evan
  • Steve
  • Brett
  • Paweł
  • Juho

Prefer a 3-week cycle:

Prefer a 4-week cycle:

  • Matt

For minor (feature) releases:

Prefer a 6-week cycle:

Prefer a 3-month cycle:

  • Evan
  • Steve
  • Matt
  • Brett
  • Paweł
  • Juho

Prefer a 6-month cycle:

We'll start doing this after 1.9.0 ships.

  • Steve brought up a good point that it may be unreasonable to expect this to happen exactly as planned. I'd agree. This is definitely an "ideally" thing and real life isn't always so clean cut, but if we want to avoid another 1.8 or 1.9 then we do just need to be committed to letting features slide if they aren't ready by a certain date. The higher frequency and regularity is meant to make that an easier decision. We'll need to keep making the release process as cheap as possible by adding test coverage and automating more steps.

  • Looks like 2-week/3-month is clear winner. Great. We'll plan the particulars when the time comes
