Using all social cms's on many sites which is the best for a education site?

In my opinion elgg is the best, why?

Community is the best of all scoail cms's out there & there is amazing support and many free plugins!

Also elgg takes up less cpu than all social cms's i have used minus the chat feature.

Now i dont want to be a douche but i am using other cms's and there themes are amazing compared to elgg though the plugins are ok not bad though elgg has more options for plugins though no games plugins as of yet.

Basically elgg needs some really good themes, about me as standrad etc i am thinking 1.9 is were this will all happen. I am really confused as wether to stay with elgg or use another social cms due to the themes being much better and other stuff like dating site features games and many other things.

I am using elgg on 3 sites right now and do not plan to use another cms for those sites so in no way am i leaving elgg for any of the reasons above, the questions and information i have provided are to determine what cms to use for a site that is for clients who will stand for nothing but the best.

Though as i said before all other social cms's support communitys are really rubbish and slow to release new plugins. Basically elgg needs some really good themes to be released as at this time elgg's themes are not doing it any justice as it is the only major flaw i can think of to be honest

  • Elgg has a very flexible system for making themes as you can see from the showcase: http://community.elgg.org/showcase

Most Elgg themes made by professional graphic designers are usually designed for a specific client that has its own graphic standards manual. These themes cannot be released to the community because they have the logos, graphic elements and tones of those clients.

If you want to have a truly ambitious and distinct theme I recommend you to hire a graphic designer to make one for you. The simple truth is that you cannot expect to get absolutely everything for free.

  • Hi "UK"

I feel I can comment on the use of Elgg as an educational site, as I'm heavily involved in Moodle, and have used a variety of CMS/LMS platforms including FirstClass, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.

I agree that Elgg is one of the best options for an educational site if it has a strong focus on collaboration, largely due to the simple core, and extensive plugins.  We are actually looking at Elgg as a parallel to Moodle, so 'work' is on Moodle, but 'socialising' is on Elgg.  Unfotunately there does not appear to be a SSO solution right now?

Anyway, we are hoping to become more involved with Elgg now, and our Moodle Theme design team (you can see some of their work here) are going to start developing Elgg Themes - including some free ones as they 'practice' :-)

  • i see yes i am going to use moodle to with elgg lol you must of read my mind @Stuart R Mealor  sounds really good inbox me if you release any themes : )

@Juho Jaakkola   that is the same for any cms, the best theme i have seen on elgg is full of bugs and has not been updated in years ulitimate cool theme etc, there needs to be more free themes from the developers of elgg like other cms's i use they have some really good themes and very customizable too this is what i mean. With the other cms's i use i do not need to hire anyone i can do it all myself thus being something that frustrates me with elgg i am a code editor but not a code maker at this time though aim to be soon! I am sure there will be some good themes released soon its just a matter of time.

At this time the best thgeme on elgg is easy theme.
