It might help to adjust the RewriteBase variable in Elgg's .htaccess file as you have installed Elgg into a subdirectory.
Or it might be a matter of the rewrite rules not fully working. It might be a matter of the webserver configuration (Apache configuration) if the setting AllowOverride in the webserver config is NOT set to the value All.
Or it might be some issue with the data directory permissions.
