Elgg 1.9 will ship with with a beautiful, responsive theme by Per Jensen. Please check out the demo and tell us what you think!
Per is the author of several responsive Elgg themes and is perhaps most well known for his plugin Mobilize. He writes the following about the new theme:
Evan Winslow from Elgg asked a few months ago if I would be interested in using my experience with mobile Elgg designs to incorporate a solution into Elgg core. I would of course love to and we agreed that I should go ahead with the idea.
I made a few suggestions, a responsive redesign of Elgg’s default theme and a separate plugin. After an interesting and constructive dialogue with Elgg’s core team, it was decided that the best solution would be a responsive Elgg theme as a bundled plugin.
The theme will be included in Elgg 1.9 and is named Aalborg Theme, after my hometown. My goal have been to design a fully responsive mobile-first layout and to give Elgg a slightly fresher color palette.
It has been a pleasure and an exciting challenge to create the theme and I’m happy to contribute in this manner. I think it’s awesome that the people behind Elgg decided to support smaller screens out of the box.
Hope you like Elgg 1.9 with Aalborg theme.
Thanks so much to Per for this great contribution! We encourage all Elgg themers to follow his lead and make your themes responsive by default.

I think everyone is excited for the final release of elgg 1.9.. cheers!
Cool! Looking forward to it! I tried, feels faster than 1.8
We've been making responsive themes by default for quite some time, none of them are here due to elgg comm regulations.
I love it
The demo site looks nice even on Firefox OS. Works better when using the Firefox browser addon for testing than on a real FF OS phone but I guess this is mainly caused by the slightly older version of the OS on the phone than due to issues with the demo site / response theme itself.
When will we get to enjoy the new version?????
@Evan, Why it is not possible to do the black top bar in position: fixed ?
the height of blue topbar named Elgg should be reduced , becuase it reduces the readability when looking with small handsets.( i think require only a small topbar like black)
@tommy it is possible
Is it possible to activate the Aalborg Theme 1.9 in the elgg 1.9 version.
Thx.
@Yes_Papa Aalborg theme was designed for Elgg 1.9 so it obviously works :-) Did you want to ask about using it with 1.8? I didn't try it myself but there's probably good chance it would just work.
could work if you change the xml to 1.8
@Yes_Papa You should backport page and head setup in start.php, and default.php.
I actually ported the Aalborg Theme for 1.8. It was just a quick experiment, so it may still have a bug or two. https://github.com/juho-jaakkola/elgg-aalborg_theme
Yes i use it in Elgg 1.9. But i have an issue :
This plugin has unmet dependencies and cannot be activated. Check dependencies under more info.
I don't know where it comes from.
How can i fix it ? Thx for help.
@Yes_Papa You need to move the theme plugin under the search and profile plugins in the plugin list. You can change the plugin order either by dragging from the plugin title or by clicking the Top, Up, Down and Bottom links that can be found near the Activate/Deactivate button.
Thank you very much. I didn't know this. It's working know. Thank a lot.
@ Evan Winslow, I will test it with my mobile soon and let you know how it works...
@ juno, is the plugin you are talking about the same as the mobile plugin that evans is talking about?
Hi we can upload images to tinymce in our server itself.. I like that option in elgg 1.9 is that a new feature in elgg 9.1 ??? If not how did you do that ??

@Tom Yes, it is the same theme plugin. My version has just been modified to work with Elgg 1.8 instead of 1.9.
I Wish to congratulate the elgg team for consistent improvements.One feature that matter to me is application of media on mobile.I wish that 1.9 would enable playback of media on handheld devices.presently zaudio player don't show on most devices but it would drive elgg sites ahead if such improvement is made e.g http://www.mtvbase.com/news/azonto-gets-a-remix/ and mp3skull.com
@ juno, thanks... I will test it and let you know how it works... in fact I am sending this comment by my mobile phone...
@Juho i found a bug https://github.com/juho-jaakkola/elgg-aalborg_theme/issues/1
soooo when is a stable version of 1.9 gonna be released? ^_^
Attractive theme! It is said it is responsive. Does it mean that I don't need to use mobilize?
