Phil suggested adding a getting started guide to the Elgg documentation http://docs.elgg.org/wiki/Main_Page. What should this cover?
    • Dear phil, I too didn't have any such intention.

Reworded, it looks fine , especially the addition "to work with elgg, to gather some (as I have had to) or will struggle until they have". It describes the whole process -- beginning as a beginner and go and go on, picking a piece of code-hack from here, and helping out a less-informed person there ...

Besides, I am fully aware that some Elggers like yourself spend hours here.

      @ Cash

Thanks. Carlos or Dhrup has told me that. I feel it will be better if that part of the engine/settings.php file comes with a comment like "not implemented" or something to the effect, so that reckless people like me won't head into the 2-db temptation. LOL!

      Cheers!

    • hi.. good topic ... nice group.... please wake-up   :)

I sure that the documantation has improved greatly. I wish that the highly skilled elgg user, the ones that have no need for documentation will put some off their ime and effort into building a goodone.

    • Hello, I am new to elgg. I just discovered about it and love it. It is a great tool. I have successfully installed it on localhost. I need help with customizing the front page, which is the page a user logs in or registers. I simply need a manual on how to change/add things around, before log in and after log in. Can anyone point me to the right direction? Thank you.

After installing elgg I am prompted to finish the install by filling out the Database connection info. After filling this out (with connection data that works through a sql query, dsn, etc.) I get the blank page showing the HTTP 500 - Internal sever...
    • OK, I am in!! Now that I have a fresh working elgg system, the real work begins.

The whole purpose of this excersize was to move my elgg system from a shared hosting platform to a dedicated. Now that I have the server working, I need to migrate. I did all of the suggested setps, but it's almost like the db is not synched. Here is what I did:

      • Create new elgg site.
      • Restore db from other site with same name
      • db admin name is same
      • updated the elgg config
      • copied data

Now when I log in, still only the new site. Shouldn't my db have the old user info, etc?

    • I think I will start a new thread as this case has morphed. Thank you Kevin and Ben for your guidance!

Administration FAQ What questions would you like to see answered?
    • Is there any sort of 'how to get started' stuff.

Paul, in the googdev group, experienced developer by the looks of it, successful install.

A section to give people some kind of start, an indication as to what they might want to do.

      Just a thought :)

  • Marcus Povey replied on the discussion topic Gravatar in the group Elgg Technical Support
I don't think the Gravatar plugin is working in Elgg 1.5.  At least, it's not doing anything on my own site and it's not working here either (assuming it is enabled on this site).
    • Fair enough.  I'll look into why Gravatar is not working on my site to see whether the plugin or my own stupidity is to blame.

    • Matt, except for the plugins actually released with the 1.5 RC 1 package, very few have yet been tested with the new code.

There have been a few changes under the hood (all for the better, of course) and it will probably take a little while for existing plugins to be fully migrated.

For my own plugins, I've found that most of the changes are in CSS and the river/activity log. Not a huge amount so far.

    • This was the result of a bug introduced into profile/start.php which prevented the event chain performing how it was expected.

      This has now been fixed.
